Reproductive health

The resources available to people, especially women, to achieve reproductive health is an integral part of their reproductive rights. The World Conference on Population and Development in Cairo (ICPD) held in 1994, 165 states endorsed the following definition of reproductive health:

Reproductive health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in all aspects of the reproductive system and its functions and processes. Consequently, reproductive health implies the ability to enjoy a satisfying sexual life without risks, as well as the ability to procreate, and the freedom to decide whether or not to do, when and how often. This last condition implies the right of men and women to be informed and have access to their choice of safe, effective, acceptable and affordable in the area of family planning and other methods of fertility regulation that no legally prohibited, and women's right to receive adequate health care that would risk pregnancies and deliveries and to give couples the best chance of having healthy children ...

A critical aspect of making reproductive health a reality for all those people in the world, is to assure access to all reproductive health services. At the Cairo Conference, the international community issued the following statement on the scope of the assistance:

Reproductive health is defined as the constellation of methods, techniques and services that contribute to reproductive health and well-being by preventing and solving problems related to reproductive health. It also includes sexual health ...

One of the main objectives of the Center for Reproductive Rights is working with to ensure that all women have access to reproductive health services of first quality. We believe that women and men have the human right to reproductive health services. This human right is derived from the human right to health, as an internationally recognized right of a more generic. Most of the activities of the Center for Reproductive Rights in this area are dedicated to advocating for recognition of the importance of reproductive health for women. In addition, we want to verify that governments are indeed committed to providing a full range of reproductive health services. Additionally, in order to assess how governments are implementing the programs of reproductive health care, the Center for Reproductive Rights conducts research worldwide on the laws pertaining to reproductive health services.
